Meaning for GlobalWafers

Under the policy of “Circular Economy” which is promoted aggressively by the government, GlobalWafers is aware that the economic and technological development shall also consider the importance of environmental protection and considers that corporates have the responsibility to share impacts on the environment. As such, GlobalWafers fulfills facilitation on resources recycling in line with the “Circular economic” vision. In addition to the three Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), we focus more on the 4th R (Redesign), which ensures pre-planning of recycling effects of reduction, reuse and re-application for the product/manufacturing process during its design stage, while continues to enhance pollution prevention technological capability. Self-monitoring is also required in order to achieve the vision of a sustainable environment.

Environmental Sustainability Performance for 2023

The accumulated installed capacity of renewable energy is 49.7 MW, expected to generate 60.3 million kWh of electricity annually and reduce carbon emissions by 29,787 tons.

GlobalWafers continues to focus on energy conservation and carbon reduction. Its wholly-owned subsidiaries, Sunrise Energy and Sunrise Power, are dedicated to renewable energy services and technology development, actively investing in the development, construction, and operation of solar power plants.

As of the end of 2024, GlobalWafers’ accumulated installed capacity of solar power plants reached 49.7 MW, with an estimated annual electricity generation of 60.3 million kWh and a reduction in carbon emissions of approximately 29,787 metric tons per year. This is equivalent to the amount of carbon absorbed by 76 Daan Forest Parks. The total accumulated investment amounted to NT$1.77 billion (including contracted but not yet operational sites).

In 2024, the company signed contracts for an additional 3.7 MW of renewable energy plant capacity, representing a new investment of NT$165 million. These projects are expected to generate 4.49 million kWh of electricity annually, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 2,220 metric tons.

Biodiversity

Biodiversity represents the sustainability and diversity of species within Earth’s ecosystems. However, the impact of climate change has progressively disrupted biodiversity, leading to its decline or disappearance, underscoring its value and importance to sustainable development. GlobalWafers pays close attention to biodiversity risks associated with its operations and actively addresses the challenges and impacts arising from these risks. In December 2023, GlobalWafers officially published its Biodiversity Policy, signed by the Chairman, committing to biodiversity assessments under this framework and taking proactive measures in response to biodiversity conservation initiatives, such as the United Nations’ Convention on Biological Diversity.

1. Assessment of Biodiversity-Sensitive Areas

Since 2022, GlobalWafers has conducted annual biodiversity risk assessments related to its operational activities. These assessments integrate data from globally or nationally important biodiversity areas, Natura 2000 network of protected sites, UNESCO-listed World Heritage Sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs). By overlaying this information with the locations of its facilities, GlobalWafers ensures careful analysis. As of the end of 2023, none of the company’s facilities are located in or near these biodiversity-sensitive areas.

2. Biodiversity Risk Assessment

Beyond evaluating sensitive areas near its existing facilities, GlobalWafers also identifies and assesses the overall impact of its operational activities on biodiversity. For identifiable risks, the company evaluates the severity of impacts and prioritizes risk management measures. Primary efforts are focused on the two tiers of “Avoidance” (preventing impacts) and “Minimization” at the source level. Based on the assessment results, the company sets targets and implements mitigation actions to reduce the ecological impact of its operations.

3. Supply Chain Biodiversity Management

GlobalWafers collaborates closely with its supply chain partners, requiring them to comply with biodiversity conservation laws and regulations. This effort aims to prevent operational activities from affecting critical habitats and causing significant environmental impacts.
