As the semiconductor industry evolves rapidly and the workforce gradually ages, GlobalWafers continues to uphold its core values of people first, integrity, passion, excellence, and innovation, recognizing employees as a vital foundation for long-term corporate development. Through structured management and the adoption of technology, the company systematically builds a supportive workplace that promotes safety, health, and career development, fulfilling its long-term commitment to the Social pillar of ESG. These sustained, systematic efforts have yielded tangible recognition: Huang Chun-Jung, Vice President of Manufacturing at GlobalWafers’ Sino-Germanium Branch, received the Ministry of Labor’s Outstanding Promoter Award at the Friendly Employment Excellence Awards, recognizing his continued dedication and measurable achievements in age-friendly employment, workplace safety, and ergonomic improvements.
Guided by this vision, the manufacturing team led by Huang has long focused on workplace safety, ergonomics, and employment support for middle-aged and older workers, achieving several notable milestones in recent years. In 2023, the team received the Ergonomics Award in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Workplace Ergonomic Hazard Prevention Best Practices Competition, recognizing its overall achievements in reducing musculoskeletal injury risks among frontline workers, improving high-risk work processes, and systematically incorporating ergonomics into operations. In 2024, the team received the Job Redesign Award at the Workforce Development Agency’s Prime Generation Employment Excellence Awards, acknowledging its efforts to help middle-aged and older employees maintain stable employment and continue their careers through job redesign. The Outstanding Promoter Award at the 2025 Friendly Employment Excellence Awards further recognizes Huang’s pivotal role in promoting a supportive workplace and driving sustained improvements to organizational practices.
In practice, GlobalWafers has established structured mechanisms for job redesign and continuous improvement, encouraging frontline employees to actively participate in process optimization, safety enhancements, and adjustments to work procedures. This approach effectively translates frontline experience into systematic improvements. The company also incorporates mistake-proofing into the initial design of work processes. By presenting procedures visually and breaking tasks down into individual steps, alongside the use of labor-saving devices, adjustable fixtures, and necessary protective equipment, GlobalWafers systematically reduces physical demands and the risk of human error for middle-aged and older employees, enhancing overall operational safety and consistency in quality.
GlobalWafers also continues to improve workplace design through technology adoption and industry–academia collaboration. AI-powered image recognition, automated storage and retrieval systems, and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) help reduce manual tasks and material-handling demands. In collaboration with National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, the company examines shift arrangements, sleep quality, and employees’ adjustment to work from an occupational health perspective, using the findings to inform ongoing refinements to job design and management practices. In occupational health management, the team also proactively implements measures to reduce chemical use at the source and substitute safer alternatives on the production floor, lowering employees’ long-term chemical exposure risks and demonstrating the company’s strong commitment to employee health and safety.
These measures have delivered tangible results. Over the past six years, the proportion of middle-aged and older employees has steadily increased, indicating that age-friendly employment practices and health-oriented job design have effectively strengthened employees’ willingness to stay and enhanced organizational stability, establishing a solid talent foundation for long-term business operations. Looking ahead, GlobalWafers will continue to strengthen its supportive workplace practices and work alongside employees to advance sustainable development that benefits the company, society, and its workforce.
