Following the Self-Commitment on 100% Renewable Energy by 2050 in its Global Operations GlobalWafers Makes Green Promise by Formally Joining RE100

Hsinchu, Taiwan, October 19, 2022 – GlobalWafers, the third largest silicon wafer manufacturer in the world, announced today its participation in RE100, a global initiative, to support Taiwan’s goal to net-zero carbon emission with practical actions, pledging all subsidiaries of the group to use 100% renewable energy by 2050.

RE100 is a global initiative led by the Climate Group in partnership with CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) to bring together influential businesses around the world in the effort to increase renewable electricity usage.

In response to climate change and extreme weather events which are increasing in frequency and intensity, GlobalWafers took the initiative in 2021 and committed to 100% renewable energy usage by 2050 in its global operations. By formally joining RE100 now, GlobalWafers reaffirms its determination to sustainable operation. Upholding its principle for “responsible growth”, GlobalWafers aims at being in the forefront of corporate social responsibility in the aspects of the environment, health and safety, as well as corporate governance.

GlobalWafers implements a dual strategy to achieve the 100% renewable energy goal. In current daily operations, GlobalWafers minimizes waste in facilities and optimizes energy efficiency for heavy-power-consumption equipment. In its future energy roadmap, GlobalWafers devotes to increasing the percentage of green energy by implementing the profound experiences of Sino-American Silicon Products Inc., the parent Company, in building solar power plants, along with signing Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). GlobalWafers’ pledge is to achieve a 20% usage ratio of renewable energy by 2030, 35% by 2035, 50% by 2040, and finally the long-term goal of 100% renewable energy usage by 2050 in order to decrease carbon emissions from electricity consumption and contribute to a sustainable environment.

Although the total group power usage increased due to capex projects, in 2021 GlobalWafers’ global plants managed to reduce electricity unit consumption by 7.1 %, greenhouse gas emission by 8.2%, and water unit consumption by 16.1%.  GlobalWafers uses resources in a way that is socially equitable, environmentally sustainable and economically beneficial to tackle climate change and secure a stable supply for our customers. Joining RE100 strengthens GlobalWafers’ green promise to be the shaping force for a sustainable world and a better future.
