The ERSO Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to Taiwan’s semiconductor, electronics, information communications, optoelectronics, display and other industries, was awarded at the opening ceremony of the “2024 International VLSI Symposium on Technology, Systems and Applications (VLSI TSA)” on April 23. The four winners in 2024 include Doris Hsu, chairperson of GlobalWafers, Hsin-Ming Kao, chairman of Marketech International Corp, Mike Yang, Prsident of QCT, and Charles Liang, founder of Supermicro.
Chairperson Hsu has led GlobalWafers to become the third largest semiconductor wafer manufacturer in the world within ten years with a dual-track strategy of mergers and acquisitions and production expansion. Through successful mergers and acquisitions (including: the acquisition of GlobiTech of the United States in 2008, the acquisition of the semiconductor silicon wafer division of Japan’s Covalent Materials, the acquisition of Denmark’s Topsil and SunEdison Semiconductor in 2016) and the expansion plan focusing on advanced processes and special niche products, GlobalWafers has become the wafer manufacturer with the most comprehensive product specifications in the industry. With operation sites in nine countries among Europe, Asia and the America, GlobalWafers provides customers with complete product solutions, establishing a key strategic position in the semiconductor industry.
Chintay Shih, chairman of the Pan Wen Yuan Foundation, said that in the 18 years since the ERSO Award was held, it has recognized 58 leaders who have made outstanding contributions to Taiwan’s industry. This year’s four new winners are from the fields of advanced wafer manufacturing, semiconductor equipment, cloud software, and servers, showing that Taiwan is a valuable technology island and we hope to continue the spirits of entrepreneurship and drive the innovative development of new technology industries.
