GlobalWafers Japan (GWJ), in collaboration with iCrystal Corporation, Nagoya University, and Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, has jointly developed a new manufacturing platform known as the Meta-Factory. The platform establishes an integrated digital twin environment that virtually connects and synchronizes the entire sequence of semiconductor manufacturing processes.
Leveraging this technology, multiple manufacturing steps—from silicon wafer production through CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) fabrication—can be seamlessly linked across corporate boundaries. This enables unified process design with a strong focus on cross-step integration and overall process optimization. Prototype runs conducted on actual production lines demonstrated that the Meta-Factory improved CIS noise characteristics by approximately 70% compared with conventional processes, underscoring the platform’s significant potential in advancing semiconductor manufacturing efficiency and performance.
